The UL National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), comprising the ‘Divine Nine‘ of historically African American fraternities & sororities, distributed books to children and their families in the 22nd Annual African American Heritage Parade in Lafayette this past Sunday.

RwK intern Caemon Scott who organized the book distribution commented,  “The kids and their families were very excited by the books, and some of them even asked for titles we were carrying by name. Hearing kids scream out, ‘I want a book!’ was compelling to hear.  It reminds me of why I do this and why it is so important to advocate for this.”

He concluded, “We started the parade with around 700 books, but they didn’t last to the first stop light. That’s how successful and popular the books were. Next year, we think we’ll need about 5,000 books to satisfy the demand of kids and parents alike.”

All of the distributed books were new, and donated by ReadingWithKids.org from its collection of over 15K books from 4 locations in Lafayette.

RwK would like to thank the Theta XI Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the Epsilon Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Theta Nu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, the Omega Eta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, the Pi Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, and the Lafayette Kappa League for help distributing books during the parade.
