Kiwanis of Acadiana has begun supplying Little Libraries to key locations in Upper Lafayette. They installed their first library at the E-Z Laundry, 717 Louisiana Avenue, near the intersection with Surrey Street in Upper Lafayette. The books for the library are being donated by the Acadiana Educational Endowment, through the ReadingWithKids.org program.
The Kiwanis effort is a generous contribution, to our children. President Ashley Guidry, seen at left, said of the effort “I’m really glad we are focusing on Upper Lafayette and the book desert identified there. The libraries require a small monetary output, minimal time commitment to restock, yet reap great rewards for those who have access to them.”
Kiwanian Michelle Luquette adds, “The mission of the Kiwanis of Acadiana is to serve children in our community. Our goal with this program is to get books in children’s hands, to get children excited about books, and to give them a brighter future.”
This local effort is an extension of a Kiwanis International initiative, which has been a partner with the Little Free Libraries program since 2022. These efforts support the Kiwanis Motto, “Serving the children of the world,” and the Kiwanis Vision, to “…be a positive influence in communities worldwide — so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive.”
The Objectives of Kiwanis International are:
- To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life.
- To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
- To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.
- To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
- To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.
- To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.
