Kiwanis of Acadiana has installed another Free Library at Mouton’s Barber Shop, 1300 University Avenue, in Upper Lafayette. At the opening, Kiwanian Michelle Luquette, pictured above at left, announced “We have decided to install six little libraries in Upper Lafayette. This is our second.”
Luquette explained that Kiwanis of Acadiana is made up of “local men and women from the community ranging from young professionals to retirees. In addition to our weekly meetings, we have a variety of service projects and events to fit everyone’s schedule. We are all passionate about making our community and the world a better place for children so they can thrive.

We asked Kiwanis of Acadiana President, Ashley Hebert, why she serves in Kiwanis. “I joined Kiwanis because I like their mission… serving the children of the world. There are many underprivileged children in our community… the number of children lacking a steady home, adequate daily food, and access to books in Lafayette would astound many who live and work here! I enjoy doing service projects where I can see actual outcomes. Installing these libraries in the “book desert” of Upper Lafayette has brought me into some businesses that I likely would have never stepped into otherwise. We’ve been thanked and appreciated at all locations. I feel like our work is needed and welcomed.”

Mouton’s Barbershop can be reached at (337) 289-6901. Kiwanis offers a variety of clubs, including those for high school and college students. For those interesting in working with Kiwanis International, anywhere in the world, the organization offers this Kiwanis location finder.
This Little Library joins the one Kiwanis installed at EZ Laundry. Books for the Little Libraries are donated by the Acadiana Educational Endowment through their ReadingWithKids.org program.
