The Black Cat Coffee House in Upper Lafayette now hosts a Bouquiniste, one of the small second-hand book collections that ReadingWithKids.org is adding to local retail establishments. Owner Geth Aguirre noted, “Books are knowledge. Nowadays everyone is on the phone, learning empty information. Our Bouquiniste offers a good variety, something for everyone. People are always picking them up and reading them.”
The Black Cat Coffee House is a locally owned, woman-owned business. “We will make two years in November. When I founded the business I was 19, I’m 21 now,” Aguirre continues. “I’d always worked in coffee shops and I love the craftsmanship, and I enjoy the one-on-one experience.
“We offer a wide variety of coffees teas and pastries, and we try to add a little of an ethnic background to our menu. My parents are from Chihuahua, Mexico. My dad immigrated when he was 14 and my mom was about 5, both are now US citizens. I was born here in Lafayette, and graduated from Carencro High.”
Aguirre also sees the Black Cat Coffee House as an opportunity to give back. “We always had a farm and I wanted to take animals home I have a love for animals. I feel like animals are forgotten and neglected. So we support different animal charities. Every month we donate some of our profits to Animal Aid, and we host a lot of their events. This month they have a “Kitten Yoga,” and the Black Cat Coffee House will be there to help publicize it. We give away gift cards at “Bark in the Park.”
Aguirre keeps up an impressive schedule. “I am also a nursing student at Franciscan Missionaries University, also known as Our Lady of the Lake University. I’m in my junior year and I will start clinicals in the spring. I will be graduated in the spring of 2028.”
